Two days ago in Long Beach, Washington at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, the flowers were stunning—rhododendrons and azaleas and every sort of blooming bush and tree, plus tulips and daffodils. An eye-feast of whites and reds, purples and lavenders. Flowering trees were on my mind, coming back to Bend (Oregon) on the east and dry side of the Cascade Range. The rhododendrons are not blooming yet but as homage to the May Day of flowers and floral baskets, here are trees I saw this afternoon walking through neighborhoods and along the Deschutes River. It has been a long time since I lived in a place where trees bloomed on the first of May.
